Council Preview: Boulet aims to shake up parish emergency preparedness

Here is a selection of items on the agendas for this week’s meetings of the City and Parish councils. To see the full agendas, check out the links below:

Emergency Prep

State law requires every parish to have an office of homeland security and emergency preparedness to coordinate local responses to major and minor disasters, like extreme weather or even terrorist attacks. For Lafayette, that has been handled by the parish’s 911 district, which works closely with law enforcement, local government and community services groups to prepare for and respond to emergency situations.

City Council

Final Adoption

Gas station. The City Council will vote Tuesday on a contentious proposal to convert the former Flowers Etc. shop on the corner of University Avenue and Agnes Street into a gas station, which neighbors loudly opposed last month. Neighbors previously convinced the council to reject a similar gas station proposal at a nearby location in 2023, but that led to a successful lawsuit against the council by the project’s developer, which could factor into Tuesday’s vote.

Spoil banks money. The City Council will vote Tuesday on acknowledging that LCG is unlikely to get $1.5 million in state reimbursements for Guillory’s 2022 Vermilion River spoil banks removal. The funds have long been seen as a lost cause as the $3.7 million caper ran afoul of federal, state and local laws, prompting multiple lawsuits that Boulet’s administration has sought to resolve.

Introduction

Emergency Preparedness. Boulet’s administration is asking the councils to consider revamping LCG’s emergency preparedness efforts by creating an internal parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and funding positions for a director and an emergency preparedness officer at a combined cost of $186,000 a year. The move comes as Boulet enters her first hurricane season as mayor-president, and it follows weeks of frustration with LCG’s response to the strongest winds Lafayette had seen in decades in May.
