LPD identifies Cpl. Segus Jolivette as slain officer

One officer has died and three others are hospitalized but stable after taking fire while dispatched Thursday to assist city marshals in Jeanerette.

Two officers were hit by direct fire, and bullet fragments struck two others, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Cpl. Segus Jolivette, a hostage negotiator, died from his injuries, LPD confirmed Friday.

Jolivette was an 11-year vet at LPD, worked patrol on top of his SWAT duties and formerly served as a school resource officer. He is survived by his wife and five children.

Jeanerette marshals requested SWAT assistance from LPD in trying to serve a warrant to an armed suspect who took hostages. LPD maintains mutual aid agreements with nearby municipalities and law enforcement agencies. The suspect was arrested.

“I am deeply saddened to share the news of the recent loss of one of our cherished community members and a devoted officer of the Lafayette Police Department,” Mayor-President Monique Boulet wrote in a press release. “This rare and tragic event brings us great sadness and grief. Our hearts go out to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. To honor their courage and dedication, I ask that you join me in prayer and support for all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

This is a developing story.
