Sr. Cpl. Segus Jolivette was killed by a fellow officer’s bullet, News15 reports, citing unnamed local government and law enforcement sources.

Jolivette, a hostage negotiator, was among four Lafayette officers hit as police exchanged fire with an armed suspect in Jeanerette. Because the suspect, Nyjal Hurst, shot at police, allegedly initiating the firefight, he may yet face first-degree murder charges, an LSU criminal justice professor told News15.

Hurst, a convicted felon, was arrested and is in custody on outstanding charges. He has not yet been charged in connection with the shootout. Police rescued the two hostages he held.
