Housing

What changes, if any, would you pursue to Lafayette’s Development Code?

I support changes that move us toward a denser, more walkable parish.
Higher density, multi-story residences within walking distances of restaurants, stores, and other amenities. However, we do need to make sure we’re keeping in mind outlying distance when developing in this way, and we extend reliable public transportation to these areas.
At the same time, I believe that there is a space to maintain the ‘character’ of neighborhoods to resist pricing current residents out and make sure that Lafayette becomes a much more livable place.

Would you support using public funds for housing initiatives? Why or why not?

When initiatives support the greater socioeconomic effort that the voters parish wide support, it’s imperative that the council also supports those initiatives. I support any initiatives that retain current residents or entice new residents to Lafayette.

Quality of Life

What role should local government should play in economic development and the job market?

Local government should have the goal to create an environment where new business creation is logical and supported, business expansion is encouraged, and should act as advocates for the parish to bring in external businesses.

Should Lafayette spend public dollars to finance quality of life programs and to what extent?

Programs geared toward the attraction and retention of residents should be a high priority, however, we need to make sure those programs are fiscally sound. Adding a bike trail that no-one uses doesn’t serve the community and wastes dollars that could be spent more efficiently on other programs. These programs are vital, but need to be tempered with real world results.

Flooding

Would you support stricter development standards to limit flood risk related to new construction?

For every $1 we spend on flood mitigation we save $6 were a flood to occur. We must strike a balance between onerous standards and value impacting requirements to maintain and improve the parish while protecting residents.

How would you prioritize spending on stormwater management and infrastructure in the future?

We know what works, we’ve shown this over the last 4 years. We just need to move those projects faster and on budget. If we want to retain and attract residents we, as the local government, need to be able to look people in the eye and tell them that we have a plan, we’re sticking to the plan, and the plan is not going to cost 3x what we told them.
