Community Manager

The Current is seeking a Community Manager to manage our social media accounts and help us connect with our audience and community.

This contract position has three goals: 

  • Grow The Current’s audience 
  • Connect us with our readers
  • Connect our readers to each other 

This position will manage our social media accounts, create and implement digital engagement projects, help us find ways to reach new people and coordinate events with our members and audience. 

Compensation and Benefits

$18 – $25 per hour depending on experience. Workload ranges 5-10 hours/week. This is a contract position.

  • Manage The Current’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts
  • Assist with audience development 
  • Assist with fundraising campaigns 
  • Share and curate news content for social media platforms  
  • Create content and campaigns native to social media platforms 
  • Create and manage social and civic calendars and related content
  • Attend weekly editorial and staff meetings
  • Assist with event planning and production 
  • Create and distribute promotional materials 
  • Pitch ideas for new engagement content (social and IRL) 


  • Mission-driven and collaborative
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills 
  • Proficient with social media tools (Facebook/Instagram Business tools; Twitter; LinkedIn, etc.) 
  • Proficient with email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Active Campaign etc.)
  •  Some experience with design apps (Canva, Adobe)

Nice to have

  • Savvy about current media trends, particularly in news
  • Some experience coordinating/managing events
  • A knack for graphic design 
  • Experience with web-publishing platforms (WordPress) 
  • Interest in local news/current affairs 
  • Conversant with ethical and professional standards in journalism
