Controversial library director bill passes House

The change was spearheaded by board member Robert Judge who, at his second meeting in 2021, failed to convince the board to change the mission statement by removing recreation and cultural enrichment. Over three years later, he succeeded in making that change and more.

The Rapides Parish Public Library system hopes telehealth can expand access to medical care for residents of Glenmora and other towns like it across the rural parish.
A pair of bills filed for the Legislature’s regular session would apply the state’s obscenity laws to public libraries, which are currently exempt. Rep. Josh Carlson, a freshman representative from Lafayette, is carrying the legislation in the house. Carlson, a former Lafayette Parish councilman, has also filed a bill removing the requirement that library directors carry a master of library science.

On Tuesday, the Parish Council introduced an ordinance authorizing Mayor-President Monique Boulet to buy 6 acres of land for construction of the library. The ordinance is up for final adoption at the council’s March 5 meeting.

Search committee chairperson and library board Vice President Stephanie Armbruster has scheduled a first meeting for Jan. 29, she announced at Tuesday’s library board meeting.

Librarians will not be reimbursed for attending ALA conferences or continuing education as a result of a 6-1 vote by the board of control Monday to dissociate itself from the ALA. Only board member James Thomas voted against cutting ties with the ALA.

Due to supply chain issues created by the pandemic, the board is moving forward with a plan for a smaller library than could have been built if the process had been initiated earlier.
In an email sent shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, Judge informed the board of his resignation as president effective 5 p.m. Monday. No explanation was provided. His term as president was set to expire Oct. 31.

Danny Gillane believes a majority of the Library Board of Control has no interest in building a new branch north of the Evangeline Thruway. In 2019, $8 million was set aside for the project, which has hit several delays.
