Lafayette 101
Bonds
LCG pays for infrastructure in two ways: with cash or with debt (bonds). Selling bonds requires two basic steps: council approval and state bond commission approval. Bonds are sold in the market. LCG’s bond rating — essentially a credit rating — influences the cost of interest. In any given year, LCG carries hundreds of millions in debt.
Parish Council
Resolution
Library grant for voting rights discussion. This resolution authorizes the Lafayette Public Library to apply for a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities for a discussion series on voting rights. This is the same grant rejected by the library board early last year.
Final Adoption
Property tax rates. This ordinance sets the parish property tax rates for the next fiscal year. Property values have not changed much this year, so the proposed tax rates are mostly the same. This ordinance sets the property tax rate for the Lafayette Airport Commission.
$675,000 for as-needed Parish Drainage Flushing Services. This ordinance appropriates American Rescue Plan Act funding to contract services to flush drainage systems on an as-needed basis.
Public Hearing
Complaints about assessed values. During this portion of the meeting, property owners who disagree with the valuations set by the Lafayette Assessor will make their case.

City Council
Resolutions
$118.5 million in bond issues. This resolution authorizes the mayor-president to sell $68.5 million worth of bonds backed by city sales taxes for city infrastructure. This resolution authorizes the mayor-president to sell $50 million worth of bonds backed by LUS’s revenue for utility upgrades.
Final Adoption
$37,000 for Festival Acadiens et Créoles. This ordinance provides additional funding to support the festival this October.
$100,000 to investigate the Executive Branch. This ordinance funds the investigation launched by resolution at the last City Council meeting.
Property tax rates. This ordinance sets next year’s rates for city property taxes at the same level.
Brown Park Expansion. This ordinance authorizes the mayor-president to acquire — by expropriation, if necessary — land adjacent to Brown Park. The City Council has not yet approved full funding for the mayor-president’s proposed park expansion.

Final Adoption
Contract with Broussard to widen Highway 89. This ordinance authorizes the mayor-president to enter an agreement with the City of Broussard to widen Highway 89. Broussard will reimburse $254,000 in costs associated with the portion of this road between Pinhook Road and Ambassador Caffery Parkway.
Food Truck Parks. This ordinance approves various changes recommended by the Parish and City Planning Commissions as well as the City Zoning Commission to regulate Food Truck Parks. A red-lined version of the new LDC is available here.
