Should Lafayette stop partying at midnight on Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras float with big mask

This year, Lafayette may stop the merriment (or mischief?) at the stroke of midnight on Mardi Gras day

Lafayette’s councils are weighing an ordinance to prohibit alcohol sales between midnight and 6 a.m. on Ash Wednesday. The measure is up for a final vote Feb. 1.

Some bar owners are already criticizing the proposal, saying it will cut into sales as they continue to recover from pandemic-related closures.

The Guillory administration says it’s a matter of public safety, and that the proposal has the support of local police, who would be responsible for wrangling potentially unruly crowds.
