Lafayette city, parish property tax bills may increase

Looking under LCG's hood

Tax bills may rise next fiscal year for city and parish property owners should the City and Parish councils vote to increase or maintain current millage rates in September, a common adjustment to property taxes called a “roll forward.”

The City Council will consider roll forwards for funds that pay for public building maintenance, police and fire salaries, the city’s general fund and more. Library funding, juvenile detention, the parish courthouse and the airport are among the rate adjustments before the Parish Council.

LCG faces a tighter budget cycle, with costs rising and the Boulet administration looking to increase salaries for public employees in a bid to shore up vacancies.

By law, property tax rates rise and fall with property values to maintain consistent revenues year-to-year. When councils “roll forward” tax rates, they either reset taxes at their voter approved maximum rate, increasing tax bills, or preserve a new max rate established by a decline in assessed property values.

Here’s the list of proposed rate adjustments, according to the council office.
