Arts Beat: 9/5 – 9/11

Grizzly Bear @ Acadiana Center for the Arts

When? Tuesday, Sept. 11

What’s the big deal? The indie band that every other indie band has wanted to sound like for the past decade is making its way to one of the most formidable lands of indie bands. Grizzly Bear will perform on Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Downtown Lafayette. A couple of art school grads from Brooklyn, N.Y., Grizzly Bear (or “the bear” as the cool kids call the group) mixes Beach Boys-esque harmonies and instrumentation with Radiohead’s latter-day spacey vibes. In 2009, the psychedelic pop-rock band caught critical and commercial success with its excellent third album, Veckatimest, which features the singles “Two Weeks,” “Cheerleader” and “While You Wait for the Others,” which was covered, karaoke-style, by the velvet voice of Michael McDonald.

After a quick break around 2013, the band returned last year with its fifth studio album, Painted Ruins. Like most of the bear’s other records, Painted Ruins is really, really good — so good that if you’re a musician, you’ll sigh for a month after listening to it then quit playing music because the bear already covered everything.
