Lafayette 101
Separate and Together
By charter, both the City of Lafayette and Lafayette Parish still exist as legal entities. Their governmental functions are consolidated. Most assets — land, infrastructure, capital — are owned separately by those entities.
Parish Council
Executive Sessions
Garcia v. LCG. The Parish Council will meet behind closed doors to discuss a lawsuit stemming from a 2021 car crash with an LCG employee.
Final Adoption
No significant items.
Introduction
Polling location. The Parish Council will look Tuesday at permanently changing the polling location for voters in Precincts 6 and 50 to Carencro Heights Elementary School, previously Carencro Bob Lilly, on Tee Ma Road.
$1M for roads. The Parish will also look at adding $333,000 to its road overlay program to match $1 million in additional state funding to repair roads.
City Council
Resolutions
Paul Breaux. The City Council will vote Tuesday on a resolution from Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux recognizing students displaced by the closure of Lafayette’s all-Black Paul Breaux High School in 1970 and their subsequent forced integration into other parish schools.
Final Adoption
LUS spending. LUS is asking the City Council to approve an $11 million spend down of its $39 million in reserved earnings to accommodate major investments in its efforts to replace water supply lines and electrical distribution system.
Introduction
Spoil banks settlement. Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet’s administration is asking the City Council to greenlight its purchase of the final ⅓ interest in a piece of land in St. Martin Parish where Lafayette Consolidated Government controversially removed spoil banks from along the Vermilion River in 2022. The third land owner sued LCG during Josh Guillory’s administration over the spoil banks removal, and Boulet’s City-Parish Attorney Pat Ottinger informed the council that a settlement has been reached to acquire his interest in the land for the same price that LCG paid the other owners.
Joint Items
Final Adoption
The Extra Mile. Boulet’s administration is proposing a shift in federal grant fund distribution to allocate another $25,000 to The Extra Mile, a non-profit organization that works with state agencies to help families gain access to essentials like clothes and housing. The additional funds will add to $75,000 already set aside for sewer work at one of the organization’s facilities.
